Infront of Qutb Minar |
Saturday was really fun! The day before I was feeling pretty homesick and lonely so it was nice to have a good day. Sid picked me up and we went to see a couple things in the city. We went to the Qutb Minar which is the tallest stone tower in India. It was named for the Muslim sultan Qutub-ud-din Aibak. The first Muslim mosque is next to the tower. We also went to a couple markets and looked around at all the beautiful colorful clothing, fabric, shoes and so much more. It was nice to go out but India is so exhausting. I am sure I will get use to it but there are so many people and so much going on all the time, that it takes effort to just be aware of what is happening right around you.
After the sightseeing and the markets we went to this really cool area to eat dinner, the Hauz Khas Village. In the 1980's the village was cleaned up a lot and many upscale boutique shops and cool restaurants moved into the area. The village has a definite hipster feel. After I ate the best veggie burger I've had in a year (it’s safe to say Australia doesn't do vegetarian food as well as India...Duh) we went to a small bar called Kaffine to have a drink and listen to some beautiful music sung in Hindi. The place was tiny and the musicians were only about 3 feet away. It was a really cool atmosphere and I loved the live music.
On sunday I went to a fitness festival thing that happens most Sundays on the streets next to my hotel with Sid. (Thanks again Sid for taking me so many cool places!) They close down the streets in the morning and put up stages with different activities. It was pretty funny and there weren't too many people there, which was nice. There was an event where people kicked a soccer ball into a goal and about 30 people watched. There was a stage with a Bollywood dancer and lots of people were dancing along. But really what I went for was the yoga. It wasn't exactly relaxing though. It was outside, humid, hot and dirty. There were only a couple people actually doing the yoga and most of them were kids. I think there were more people watching and taking pictures than actually practicing. Either way, it was nice to do yoga for a bit.
I hope everyone had a great weekend!
